WOULD YOU SLAP YOUR AFRICAN MUM FOR MONEY?

As an African mum raised in Nigeria, I am always surprised by the questions my children ask me sometimes. Here I am sitting in front of the TV watching my beloved KDRAMA series (which am currently addicted to and seriously need deliverance from!). when one of my daughters asked me excitedly, ‘Mum will you let me slap your face for $1 million dollars?’

To say I was horrified at the question will be an understatement. How can my own daughter that I carried for nine mums as Nigerians will say ask to slap my face!..  So that means she has no respect or fear for me as her parent, immediately I thought about my dad, how can I even imagine in my lifetime to slap my mum’s face in no matter the circumstances (Epe gidi niyen, abi asasi) Perhaps if someone is under a curse. Culturally it is an abomination and as a Christian, it is a grave sin.

So I started to lecture her.

  1. Bible The fifth commandment says, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12).
  2. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: 1 Timothy 6:10
  3. Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

It must mean I haven’t done a good job as a mother if the thought even crossed her mind. It will be a generational curse to whoever does that to their parents, I said. Even for a Billion dollars how can anyone think of slapping their own parents!.

What you do to your parents, your own children will do too!.

Mum! She said, ‘This is why I don’t like sharing jokes with you. Even all my friends said their mum will force them to slap them to do it if they are unwilling’… My question then was ARE THEY AFRICAN PARENTS!.

What do you guys think, I will love to hear your answers
